I bought a new gauge set from a 2000 explorer from a junk yard for 45$. It worked out great for about two weeks, but then it started doing this..can anyone tell me why? I still have the other cluster that i could probably use the speedometer motor from, if you think that will work..

My guess is that you've got a bad ground somewhere. My speedo has acted like that before.... needle dropping when accelerating, or needle rising when letting off the gas, or just not working at all.

I just had to clean up the grounds and everything worked for awhile. However, now its acting up again, but I think its from a damaged ground wire at the firewall. I paid particular attention to the grounds on the firewall near the ECU. Mine is a '97, so the speedo function is a little different with the speed sensor on the tranny (where yours is on the rear axle, I think), but it should still have similar wiring.
