I have a 2000 ranger (3.0L V6 Flex Fuel 4X4 5 speed manual) and I am trying to gather some information on doing an engine swap. I am planning on finding a re-manufactured 302 from a 2000 Explorer. I know mostly what modifications I need to make to my ranger in order to make this swap, but I recently made a cool discovery. Proformance Unlimited makes some very fine quality 302's, but I don't know if the additional modifications they make to their engines will be compatible with my ranger. If possible I would just assume invest some money and buy a crate engine from them if it will work just as well. Better than getting a 302 from a junkyard. Here is a link to the engine I would like to buy at some point, if it will indeed fit in my ranger.

Please help if you know anything about this topic. I know I will need a dual sump oil pan as opposed to the front sump that comes with it, but what else would need to be changed?

Thanks,
Casey

Need a bit more info - lot depends on the front suspension for mounts and your goals. A 302 or 5.0, all the same. Most end up going with the Explorer set-up, no matter what the short block is, for the good intake and short front dress. Slap in a hot cam and some good heads and you'll turn heads.

It's a 4X4 so the front suspension should be suited to handle the extra weight. I'm looking to do my little ranger some justice with some more power. The 3.0, even after installing a cold air intake and new exhaust system over the past year or so, is still probably not even as powerful as a stock 4.0L.

$8100 bux for a 5.0. wow.:shok:

makes the 350 hp 351 for $8750 look reasonable.

I was stunned by the price too, until I read the list of things included. It has some good parts going into it but on top of that it includes the FAST EZ-efi system which is about $2K of the price.

Since your truck is 4x4, this gets easy.
You want Ford Explorer 5.0 motor mounts and plates. Along with Explorer manifolds, and it drops right in.
Refer to the article by Rwenzing on the TRS home page.

Many variables, depending on how much work you want to do
You have a 2000 Ranger, which has a returnless fuel system. Unless you choose '99-'01 Explorer 5.0 parts (ECU, fuel rails) this will likely need to be changed.

Based on your link, you want more performance, so you can skip the Explorer stuff. That means custom headers.

I would do what Teddy suggests, and get you a donor 2000 explorer, this combined with this and you will be cheaper than the $8100 price tag, will have a roller motor ( which is more efficient which equals more fuel economy) and have more power....

Me, this is the next crate engine I'm going with :headbang:

I like it, Ranger SVT. So you say the Ford racing engine would also deliver better fuel economy than the one in the link I posted? If it does give more power and better mileage at a lower cost, then I will sure as hell go with that one. And I'm assuming a 2000 Explorer's computer would also work with it?

Keep us posted on this, that is a very nasty engine. :icon_thumby:

the 5.0 or the boss block windsor?

the 5.0 is the winner.....same 8 g price though:sad:

And then figuring out a manual transmission that will handle that horsepower. My stock Mazda 5 speed most definitely will not.

The specs listed from the proformance motor uses a hydraulic flat tappet cam, not a roller cam like the FMS motor, and the proformance is rated at 300, the FMS at 345...Take the FMS long block, bolt on the explorer EFI intake and your good to go. Thats why I said get the 2000 donor so you will have the intake and harness, FEAD, and anything else you may need...When it comes down to it, you will still need to get a donor for all the accessories, ECU and intake as the proformance doesn't have the explorer EFI intake, so your getting the donor plus either an $8100 motor from proformance or a $6350 motor with more power and more efficiency not to mention a flater torque curve over the flat tappet cam motor?? To me thats a no brainer...

And yeah, that new Coyote motor in a 2010 4x4 ranger configured to run AWD and Edelbrock's new E-force lung on top would definitely be a fun grocery getter :icon_thumby:

Yea the coyote definitely sounds like the better option. Any ideas on what type of transmission to use? I would love to keep my truck as a 5 speed manual if at all possible. I just need to find one that can handle the coyote's power.
