Pulled the electric 1354 today and have a manual one ready to go in. Got a bit of a shower with tranny fluid in the process. The gasket between the tail housing and the transfer case is in pieces.

I'd like to use a new gasket, but that will probably mean waiting until Monday when the Ford stealer is open. Will it hold if I use RTV only and no paper gasket? Obviously, the tail housing on this 4R55E tranny fills up with fluid.

Yes, RTV works just fine for sealing up gearboxes and shafts. It's only on crankcases that it might be a problem (even then, it's not too weird to see it used on oil pans).

It's a bit harder to separate the next time; that's the only reason I would prefer a donut gasket.

I keep sheets of gasket material for times like this.. I use seanat very seldom for ANY purpose. Most times gaskets can be reused.. I am not a fan of beating and prying stuff next time I take it apart..

RTV works just fine, it takes an extra minute of fussing to separate it but it'll take a bunch of time to make a gasket.

RTV has always been my first choice when mating a transfer case to a tranny. Whenever I have to seperate the two I usually just use the air chisel with a tip that's sharpened and they always come apart right away not matter what's sealing them together.

RTV has always worked great for me on oil pans, intake manifolds, valve covers, transfer cases, and trannys.

The only problem I had is when I tried to use it to seal my fuel pump assembly around the top of the tank. Gas eats RTV pretty quickly. I ended up using Gas and Oil Seal-All.

You can buy the gasket in question from Ford for like $5.

I tend to agree that making a gasket like this is not at all worth it, compared to extra effort on removal.

Both work fine but I prefer the gasket because it is much simpler to remove when needed and looks better. A lot of guys put way too much RTV on and it squishes out. Just my preference.

But for a diff cover, RTV only.
