So what color RTV gasket maker should I be using for my differential covers? Canadian Tire sells grey, black, blue, clear, copper...?

The clear and the blue don't seem right at all...

I was thinking black, but want to be sure.

Opinions?
Thanks.

I've been using this stuff for years. No regrets. It's great stuff.

For the mostpart, black/blue is engine oil resistant, grey is gear oil resistant, orange/red is higher temp, copper is highest temp, not all RTV is made equal though, so read the package for the qualities of the enclosed product. And for heavens sake, if you are going to be using it on the engine, make sure it is O2 sensor and catalyst safe, or it could kill your catalyst.

Ultra gray is all we use at work.

MOPAR brand black ATF resistant. That is hands down the best stuff in the world. I use it on everything.

Ultra grey is good for nearly everything. If it gets really hot, then use copper. That is all you need.

Funny how a topic like this would show up now. Just to let you know, I just changed my diff gear oil and used Permatex black gasket maker on the diff cover. I also used a Fel-Pro diff cover gasket, even thou orginally in 1996, Ford didn't use one.

I used to use thisntedish brown stuff in a can with a brush stuck to the lid... Stayed hippy forever... I remember making a thermostat gasket out of a dentine ice (gum) package, and coating it in this stuff, worked really well!

Don't remember who made it what it was called... Was an old can and really dirty... Had a unique smell to it though...

only thing that I could think of that fits your description.

That might be it... Though the stuff I used was old, and in a metal can... This was probably 7 years ago that I saw it last though
