I prsonally prefer the grey, but...

BTW, be sure to fill in that little draiin squiggle at the bottom of the transmission side of the mating surface.

Why?

I mean...I know there's a rubberized gasket between the case and tailhousing from the factory...and that little drain squigly between 'em. But why even bother with a gasket there? Just always wondered that.

I didn't bother with any sealant between my M5OD and t-case since the M5OD has a rear seal but I spose it couldn't be a bad idea if the seal leaked.

Yep, it's just in case the seal leaks. The squiggly is filled for the same reason. If it's open and fluid leaks into the area between the case and trans, it will drain out there and eventually let the trans run dry.

I figured that was the reason for sealing it, and that it wasn't a requirement.

If you had a bad leak from the tranny or t-case, it could give you a nasty surprise when you pulled the case off... :icon_rofl:

I never put anything between them. If your tranny fluid is leaking, better it leaks so you can see it.

does anyone know a part number for that factory gasket... my NAPA actually couldnt find the gasket even with me bringing them the old one.

The point is that you probably WON'T see it until your transmission is making bad smells.

If the drain squiggle and t-case mounting surface is sealed you can lose at max about half a pint of fluid and that will simply be trapped back there.

Once that chamber has 8-10oz in it no more fluid will be "lost"

BTW, what if your seal starts leaking when you can't do a damned thing about it... say somewhere on I-90 in South Dakota when you are 1400miles from home?

If you seal the T-case to the trans you could forget to install the seal
and wouldn't lose your fluid.

Basically Will, I don't think you really thought it through before posting....

Very very very valid point Allan. I get it now. lol. Let that rear seal leak out...there's that trans to tcase seal that's still there(with filled swiggley), it'll limit the amount of total possible fuild loss in the trans case. Plus..I'm sure you'll hear the lack of fluid in there overtime. If you're someone who's had a trans leak and constantly checking that fluid, like me, you get into a good habit of always checking that fluid. Caught mine about 2 qts too low one time. Good thing I checked it when I did. I saw all the ATF down my bedsides. lol.
