have a plastic tank from a '94 short bed. i have a '88 long bed with a steel tank. are they interchangable? or will the plastic tank fit with mods? i'd rather the steel but i worry ethanol will make it rust faster than non-ethanol (which i can't afford).

Ethanol won't make it rust, that takes water. When they started polluting our gas with ethanol we had a ton of trouble-especially with police cruisers- clogging injectors and junking fuel pumps because the ethanol dissolved the surface rust on the inside of all the gas station tanks.
My 93 didn't have a gas tank or even a crossmemebr to hold it up. I used an 86-88 steel tank because it was about 1/3 the price of a plastic tank with a stock 93 sending unit minus the pump. I still have the 86-88 sending unit if you want it.

I went the opposite way and put a tank from an '88 into a '92 frame. Both short wheelbase, single cab trucks though... the tank fit fairly well but the straps did not, I had to make those.
