gas tank problems

I have been having gas tank problems. The tank keeps tripping the auto-shutoff at the pumps and it takes me forever to fill up. I know it's the gas tank vent on the top of the tank, so I pulled it off, cleaned it up, made sure it worked, put it back in and hoped that it work. Well it didn't. pulled it out again and drilled out the hole, but I have yet to put it back in. My question is, Do you guys have problems filling up your bIIs? Is my problem unique? I can take a picture of the drilled out valve tonight. it's just really annoying, I don't want to pull out my gas tank a third time.

I'd say there could be a kink in your filler neck. Doesn't hafta be much, just enough to not let the fuel flow into the tank as fast as it's getting pumped. I had the same problem on an old truck of mine that was brand new, I just pulled the nozzle out a little bit instead of shoving it all the way down the hole. Worked for the most part.

I am with footee the tube that come up the fill pipe may be kinked and if you dont shove the nozzel all the way in it should fill fine fords are really bad for doing this it is not the vent in my opinion if you find the the problem then let us know so the next time we will be better informed to help the next guy

the only problem i have filling these is when im full and the auto shut off at the pump happens i get alot of bad spray.... :| like fuel sprays out of the gas filler tube and runs down my truck...

really anoying especially if u get some on u then u reek of gas lol

ok that could be the vent and no I dont like that shit either sucks to smell like gas when you are on a trip

The filler pipe is TWO tubes one inside the other.

The fuel flows into the tank through the smaller INNER tube.

It is very easy for that tube to become obstructed

How to you access this tube? or rather pair of tubes

pull it totaly off tank and body and check it and then replace with diffrent filler tube or buy whole new one I dont belive you can remove iner tube

update:
I put the modified valve back in and re-installed the gas tank. Good news, it works but not great. I can at least get the thing to fill with out me holding it. The filler neck didn't even have an inner hose, so I ordered a specialty fuel hose (1 inch id) from mcmaster-carr that will hopefully allow me to fill the tank without any frustrations. here are some pics of the vent value after I drilled it out. I don't have any before pics but the hole wasn't nearly as big

This. The small tube falls off of the filler neck and then there's no venting while you try to fill, since the large outer tube is now filling the tank instead of venting it.

I've fixed this exact problem before on a friends 84.
