Gas tank cleaning...?

I got a gas tank that is pretty rusted inside, its from a 1972 Suzuki A100 GO-FER (check my build thread on page 2 for pics) Its rare-ish bike, so a new tank is pretty much out of question. The motorcycle runs on a remote tank of gas, but wont with stock tank because of the rust.

My question is what is the best way to clean out the tank?

I know its a motorcycle but it pretty much pretains to all gas tanks, right?

there is a product in the marine industry (maybe there still is, i havent been in that line of work for over 10 years now) that you would put in a tank and turn it all around so it would coat the inside of a tank and seal it, it waould help with any small leakage and solve the problem with rust in the fuel system. it was a reddish color, thats all i can recall about it. have you checked ebay for a tank? good luck, looks like a nice bike.

Yeah checked eBay, every thing from there is straight form Asia so shipping is more than the actual part, and they all are in worse condition than mine on the outside, and have some rust on the inside.

i know on dirt bikes ive been know to get a strong cleaner and some small rock like crush n run and shake it really good for awhile and rinse till it comes out clean

Check the POR 15 site. They make a kit to solve this, cleans and lines the tank chemically. I have never tried it, but have heard good things about it. Their other products have always worked well for me.

I have used this stuff in a tank from a 65 MGB with tons of rust AND pinholes. To clean out the large rust scale i dropped in about 10 ft of chain and shook it for a while then hosed the tank out and dried it for a couple of days. Applied the Bill Hirsch gas tank sealer and not a leak or rust for 4 years now. This is the same stuff used in the aviation industry to seal fuel tanks in airplanes.
