gas mileage

98 regular cab 2.5L 5 speed 200,012 miles stock (except for K&N fliter) average 26-28 mpg checked at every fill-up. I have gotten 30mpg a few times... i reckon my foot was alittle lite those times.

87 2wd longbed 2.3L 3.45 rear gearing 4-8 MPG :icon_surprised: leaky gas tank:icon_rofl:

Had the same thing happen in a ranger at work (but the fuel line clip to filter broke), we were like wtf?? how are we getting 5mpg :icon_rofl:

After I got completely doused in gasoline and couldn't smoke a cigarette all day  I took that mother to the shop and put it on my bosses tab.

Frank

Yea I finally got enough money to get a new tank so thats what I'm doing tomorrow and that tanks been taken out so many times I could probably do it in a minute:icon_rofl:

2002 XLT Supercab 4x4 (4.0, I THINK 4.10 rear)

@ 15mpg doing roughly 55mph most often...

Shitty mileage, I know.

My old 3.0 got anywhere from 19-22... but then again, it IS winter...

just bought a low mileage 91 Ranger super with a 3.0 auto 2wd. I was hoping to swap the powertrain into my wifes 92 2wd Explorer over the summer, but from what I'm hearing it may not be worth my efforts.

the 4.0 explorer gets a consistent 16.5-17 mpg combined city/highway all year long. I was hoping to get 25 mpg with a 3.0 in it. doesn't sound like its possible:dunno:

:D my 1968 M250 "Ranger" 360 C6 3.73LS Dana 60 265/75/16s 10-11mpg summer use only:icon_thumby: and I baby it!

Yeah, for all the fuel mileage benefits you might see from that swap you might as well not even do it.

+1

Underpowering a vehicle only works to a certain point. After you reach this point, you end up having to put the pedal down so much just to make the thing move you end up using just as much gas as you would with the larger engine anyway.

Car companies seem to keep coming out with new stuff like "Variable displacement" and the like that are supposed to give you the economy of a smaller engine with the power of a larger engine...and it's all crap. You could accomplish this same task just by letting off the throttle.

Which engine is using more fuel? (Keep in mind these engines are hypothetical just to prove a point) a 5.0 liter engine at half throttle, or a 2.5 liter engine at full throttle? They'll be using roughly the same, give or take.

I think you could easily break 20mpg in your exploder the way it is with a little practice at driving better and calmer.

05 Supercab 2wd w/ open 8.8 4.10, dual exhaust, K&N and some other shyt you can see in my show thread. I average right around 300 miles per tank. I do a metric shyt ton of highway driving and drive around 40 miles around trip to and from school 2 days a week. 20 miles around trip 2-3 days a week to work and then Fridays suck ass around 38 miles round trip from my house to school to work then home. That does not include any local driving at all.

My opionin is that the OHV 4.0 in the Explorer is already underpowering it. I think the 5.0 v8 is the correct engine to use for Explorers so that you aren't always using the upper end of the powerband.

2006 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4, 4.0 automatic gets about 17 city 21 highway all stock
2007 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4, 4.0 Manual gets about 14 Combined. Got a heavy foot in that one. And only 31 inch tires.
Both are salvaged vehicles that had basically no maintenance on top of it, and once they were fixed up they do pretty good on gas.

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with what he was saying, I was just adding my opinion.
