gas mileage

Had two Explorers. '92 w/4.0 V-6 and '00 w/5.0 V8. Both w/3.73 L/S and stock tires (16"). Highway MPG 23-24 w/V-6, 21-22 w/V8. Urban ~ the same for both at 18.

Now have a '05 Ranger 4.0 4-door, 5-spd, w/29" tires and 3.73 L/S. At 75-80 freeway MPG is 22-24. Can't tell city, it never gets there, 18 or maybe 19 I should think. Original gears were 4.10s and I changed them as soon as I bought it two years ago. I'm changing them back to the 4.10s next month. I'll have to slow down to get get the same MPG, but the 3.73s do not suit the way the truck is used. If I had an automatic I'd leave them in.

Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted to hear:icon_thumby: direct comparison for a 1st generation 4.0 to a second generation 5.0
I've even been oogling the rotten 96 AWD explorer and trying to figure out how I could make it RWD only. 4wd is not required, the wife will only get in more trouble with it:icon_rofl:.

this thread has been great:yahoo:

1994 Ranger 4.0L, 4x4, 5spd, 3.27s 19.5mpg

1998 Ranger 2.5L, 2wd, 5spd 26-27mpg
1994 Explorer 4.0L 2wd, auto 18-19mpg
1992 Explorer 4.0L 4x4, auto 17-18mpg

1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 automatic, K&N Filter and a Vortec muffler. Im getting like 23 on the highway and around 18 in town

Does anyone out there in Ranger Land have any experience with the 2010 Supercab 4 cyl 2wd with a manual? I'm thinking about getting one to replace my ailing '97 Stratus, but I am a little concerned about the mileage with the 4.10 rear gears. The last truck I had with 4.11s got single digit mileage (1978 3/4 ton Dodge w/ 318 4BBL & 4 on the floor). From what I have seen it should be possible to get close to the EPA rated 27 mpg. I can live with that. Otherwise I might consider a regular cab.

Also, does anyone have any input on how many mpgs I would sacrifice if I put a cap on it?

It should get high 20's hell mine has a blue million miles on it and gets 26. A cap won't effect it either way i don't think. it's more streamline but it's more weight..... so it should balance out. You owned a dodge, I'm sorry.

In all reality though, my 2004 bone stock 4x4 was getting over 20 witht he 4.0......... so I would spring for the HP and the 4x4 and not worry about a few mpg.

Frank-

Thanks for the response. I did decide to go with the extended cab. Got myself a nice redfire metallic XLT. I'm going to wait util I make any judgements on the mileage until it's broken in. It only had 5 miles on the odometer when I drove it off the lot.

'99 3.0, With the new air filter and plugs she gets about 26 consistently.

99 2.5 5spd 3.73 gears

from 24 hgwy im gettin 23.4, and my driving is mostly on open road and part hgwy, so im pretty happy with it lol

03 2.3 5spd 3.73 gears
around 22 combined
26 hgwy

'93 supercab 4.0 4x4 with 3.73's and manual trans, best ever was 19.5, averages about 17-18. in town only about 15 and pulling my box trailer a (ouch) average of 10-12. ive weighed the truck and im at 4,300 pounds. dont know how it could be made better without removing stuff that has weight like the tube steps, grille guard and cap. its so light in the but without the cap though, and i do need the cap most of the time. i guess its not so bad for a compact truck that has the 4.0 and 4x, but ive heard of exploders having the same driveline setup and getting 23. dont think they would be anymore areodynamic, must come down to curb weight, or a slight gearing difference. i do have a vaccum guage and try to keep it in the 12-15 range, its not possible with the trailer. ive considered 4.10's but most of the time the 3.73's are plenty and it would be about a 1,000 to change it out, so im just going to live with it the way it is. my tire size is the stock 235-75-15. i run the deer-paw alloys in the summer months and jeep wrangler steel wheels in the winter. i rarely check milage in the winter, as i have about 500 extra pounds in the back and i do good to get 15 on any given tank when its cold out. the extra warm-up time, extra weight and running with the front axle locked in all combine to use more fuel. but it does eat snow pretty well, pulled my own taurus out of a pretty steep ditch this winter and a chrysler mini van down a 4" deep single lane road, snapping a tow strap twice.
