i have an 83 ranger 2.3l 4x4 on 32" tires and 3.73 gears. does 10-11 mpg sound about right? ive replaced the plugs, wires, pcv valve and adjusted the timing with no change in mpg. i was just wondering if anyone has any ideas or if this sounds like what i should be getting. thanks, arren.

if its the 1 barrel nightmare carb like i had, then thats all i got was 10 mpg, street truck with 3.45 gears and 225/75/r14 tires.

Properly running, you should get around 25mpg with stock tires.

Yeah, sounds like your tires are too big for your budget...

it actually has a pinto engine in it with a 2 barrel carb on it. but ive been trying to figure out if gearing to like 4.56 would help with my gas mileage but a lot of people have been saying its not gonna do anything. so im stuck with 10mpg...

Your problem isn't gearing. You've either got an internal engine problem, fuel management, or ignition. Do the troubleshooting and figure out what's wrong. Gearing and other external changes are just confusing the issue. Even with 32's, you should be able to comfortably get 20mpg corrected if you're easy on the throttle.

yeah, i got 10mpg then i blew a hole in the number 2 piston.

My full size chevy with a 4.3 gets 16+ around town and when I plow I get get about 14.

has the speedometer been corrected for the tire size? if not, there's your problem, your tires are bigger than stock, and that makes you go further for every revolution which makes your speedo/odo off

+1 you're actual MPG is probably more like 14-15 if you're using the odometer to calculate it. the bigger tires are deffenitely hard on the 2.3 also. I've got 4.56 gearing with 31 inch tires and am really happy with it. you will see the milage come up when you don't have to bury the throttle to get it rolling. clutch will probably last alot longer with a gear change too.

Your speedo/odometer will be 20% off, add a couple of mpg for that. You should get no less than 18 mpg. 32s will eat up power and fuel economy like Rosie Odonnell at an all you can eat buffet.

:icon_rofl:

Nice analogy...lol

I know I was getting 28 average with my 1990 4x4, 2.3 and 5 speed. 6" lift and 31s, with 4.10s and manual hubs. I knew I was never going to get anywhere in it in a hurry, so settled into my commute expecting to get passed a lot. I rarely found 5th, but still managed speed limit. When I DO get the truck back on the road, I doubt the 33s will allow me that 28 MPG, but then, it will be more toy than commuter.

You didn't mention it, arren, but is yours an automatic? If it is, then don't expect much over 20 unless you drive like a granny.

haha thats a good one. but yeah i have a 4 speed manual tranny. i have been considering the lower gears but ive had mixed opinions on that. some say it wont effect the gas mileage. i would assume it would help out since my engine will have an easier time turning the larger tires therefor requiring less gas. but if i can get some good opinions and facts that it will help out gas mileage my parents will pay for the regearing since they promised to pay my gas for school. so im not sure yet. ive done a pretty good tuneup and cant think of anything else to get my mpgs up.

a re-gear might not be a big help for the milage, but over-all driveability will be greatly improved.
