On avg a 4 banger will get 20 mpg. You're mileage is fine, remember that its still a big box not a prius.

I disagree. i was averaging 25-27 in my 95.

OP, is your truck a reg or ex cab? if its an ex cab than yeah 20 mpg sounds about right but a reg cab should be getting higher if its all stock.

are they that bad? my moms s10 i used to own averaged 27mpg. 2.2 5sp ext cab, stepside bed.

those 2.2's are way more gutless than the limas too. i drove a 2.2 5 spd reg cab and there is literally no powerband compared to the lima engine. also keep in mind lima engines have been around since the 70's so yeah they're not the most efficient 4 bangers but they are by far the most reliable.

My 89 Ranger gets about 20-21 driving near home. I drive it every month out of state and get 23-25 on the highway depending on how fast I drive.

I had a '98' 2.5L that got 25-27 mpg but was useless out on the interstate due to the 3.45 gearing. Get about 20-21 with the ext cab 4x4 auto w/4.10's. There are so many variables, tires, gears, driving habits that it's sometimes hard to compare.

I peg the speedo at 85 many times with my 2.3 and 3.45 gears. Not a problem at all rolling way above the speed limit.

^^^^ alright do you also have stock tires and gears? cuz with 3.45s and 31's the OP will not peg the speedo unless he's going downhill with a tailwind. I had 30's and 3.45s and that was bad enough. as long as you don't plan on going offroading you'd probably be fine, otherwise you will eat up the clutch very quickly.

I put 15" on the Ranger, Bronco II wheels. I run 215/70 . .so yes stockish. They are only 1" taller than stock. I have plenty of performance. If you are going to run a small engine with really oversized tires, you have no reason to complain about MPGs. Be smart.

exactly my point. once he puts bigger tires on there will be no such thing as performance anymore
