Howdy,
I have a 95 Ranger, and the rubber filler hose cracked at the tank neck.
I have to pass inspection with a tank pressure test, so I have to get it fixed.
The Ford dealer wants $550 for the hose and tube assembly, and he can "work with me a little", and knock $50 bucks off. :icon_rofl:
A replacement is offered by an online company for $98.
Does anybody have experience with this sort of situation, and be able to offer advice?
I have a utility bed on the truck, and I DO NOT want to remove the bed to change the filler. Can it be done by lowering the tank?
Thanks for any feedback, CZ

i just did this on my 1993, I used rescue tape.

don't be needlessly intimidated by pulling the bed. it is so f-ing easy it's not even funny

unbolt the bed, unscrew the filler neck behind the fuel door. and tip the bed up by hand.

I literally had it done in 20 minutes

I got mine from autozone, took about 30 mins to lift the bed and about that long to replace the tube and fuel pump while I was at it. I think it was about $150 or less cant remember. You dont have to pull bed off but does make it easier to get to tube if ya can lift and pull back a little. You only need a chain hoist at best with 2 corner to corner straps. A guy posted not long ago how he just used a bottle jack to lift I think, but really all ya need to lift is the front. 2 Guys could lift off manually with a little effort.

I lifted mine up/back a little by hand

Ouch, a big utility bed? Could be a bit rougher, but I would still look into pulling it up and back, even just a little. I looked into dropping the tank, it's not a horrible job, just takes a little more effort. You can get the filler necks for aobut 40 bucks on ebay or amazon. Just gotta do a lil shopping.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, it is a real Reading utility bed, and it is full of tools. It would take a fork lift to pick it up
Is the clamp around the tank neck a crimp on, or a regular screw type band clamp.
And where does one find "rescue tape"? Is it impervious to gas and it's fumes?

I replaced mine last year, got it off of fleabay for about 40 bucks. As was mentioned, the stock bed can be pulled easily with two people in about 20 minutes.

Your application, I think I would bite the bullet and drop the tank. Two straps hold the tank up. if you have a 4x4 you might have to remove the armor plate, but it is held on by four bolts. Gonna take a bit longer and be more of an aggravation... plan on possibly having to replace the tank straps.

Run the truck damn near empty before you do the job, that should make the tank more manageable .

The clamp is a regular worm screw type, so that should make it easier for you.

Thanks AJ, that is encouraging. I didn't know if there was enough play in the fuel lines to allow the tank to be lowered to get to the hose clamp.
I'll go dose all the bolts with Kroil, and find a hose assembly.
Thanks for the info.

p.s. I'm a retarded tinner, so I can fabricate new straps, if necessary. :icon_welder:

if you remove the three 7 or 8 mm bolts that are around the filler neck at the cap end, the whole entire hose assembly will drop with the tank, and you can take it out from under the truck and work on it at your leisure and comfort :)

you will have to remove them anyways to replace it, so that would be teh first step.

Thanks, got it ordered.
Is there enough give in the fuel lines to be able to drop the tank down far enough to get past the frame to the hose?
Is there some place that has a diagram of the rear frame area with the locations of the components shown, bed off?
Back in the day, the library had Motor Manuals that showed all that sort of thing. Saved a lot of missteps for a first timer.
Now, they look at you funny if you ask for a book. :icon_confused:
Thanks again for all the input.

Thanks Rev!

If my old eyes do not deceive me, it looks like all the pickup connections are flexible, so I can drop the front of the tank down far enough to get to the band clamp on the filler hose. :yahoo:
Thanks for the effort.

I'm sorry I didn't get more pics of it with the bed off. It didn't really occur to me. If you click on the pick, it goes a lil bigger and you can do some zooming on it before it goes all pixatosis.
