Since I don't own an engine hoist, and would likely not use one often enough to warrant buying one, I thought about a small electric hoist mounted in the ceiling of my shop. Say one with a 2000lb capacity like for a 4-wheeler or something. But what would I need in my ceiling for this? A steel I beam? A half dozen 2x12's put together? And, I am guessing an I beam would cost more than an engine hoist. Hell, the lumber might too. The winch might too.....hmm.

around here a folding shop crane costs $150-$200 and is more useful in a garage than a stationary winch.

you're right it would probably cost you more than a cherry picker.

anyways my dad uses a chain hoist in his garage and attached several strong 2x10's up in the apex of the roof. its hauled out several engines including a chevy small block.. not sure about anything heavier than that

What about building something like this, so it's moveable?

I wrapped a chain around the top of a couple of the /\ shaped members of two trusses, hooked up a come-along and pulled the engine and transmission out of my MGB. The garage had a ceiling but I was able to drop the come-along through the attic access hole.

i rented one to get my engine out and reinstall it......it was $23.xx to rent it for 24 hours

Just get a roll around engine hoist...you will be so happy you did.

THIS. And if you get one that the legs fold up, they take up next to nothing for room. IIRC I picked mine up at costco for $180, and it comes in very handy.

All you need is a properly supported ceiling and a good come-a-long. I've pulled everything from a 2.3 to a 390 this way. Why waste space with a cherry picker?

Because once you get that engine out, and say... wanna load it into buddy's truck in your driveway your stuck. Or like in my case, I need to pull my engine but my truck is immobile on stands, with no suspension or axles so whatever is lifting the engine has to be mobile.

And they work really well for tons of 'improper' uses as well!
