So I'm driving over to a buddies to help him with his dead battery, I head to this 200ft climb I have made about 67 times before with no problem. Not today, I start to head up the hill and I see my speed start to drop but I'm pushing 3k Rmps and climbing....but there's no power going to the wheels, I get up it barley and start to see that it's having trouble shifting.

I did a trans drain and fill about 6k ago. So it goes fine till 2.5k rmps and then it just revs up and struggles, so I give it a fast start (not WOT) and then get to 2.5k and let off the gas let it shift and then accelerate with no problem. fine until 2.5k then it loses power and wont shift.

I just dropped $300 into new shocks and $1600 into a new complete breaks, rotors, tie rods, bearings etc on the front. Engine runs strong.

Worth repairing or should I just give up?

is it manual trans? if so just sounds like you need a clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing...

Tough call.
I was given a 86 Ranger by the neighbor. After dumping $2000 into it plus my labor i got it road worthy. A few months later the auto trans blew. I decided that the truck was worth a new trans as I had rebuilt or replaced everything but the motor. The "new" trans cost $2000 and lasted just over a year. If I was to do it over, I would go with a standard.

Have you checked all your fluids?

If you're suddenly low on trans fluid, check your trans cooler lines. My 93 4.0 auto had a leaky line and did exactly what you're describing. A slit piece of fuel hose and 4 hose clamps fixed it, the patch outlasted the rest of the truck.

just checked fluid.. brown but no burnt smell.

So Update, I'm trying to pinpoint the problem. This affects all gears 1-4, So i'm wondering if it's a bad torque converter or a stuck servo.

fluid is up to level just need changed as it's brown (hesitating to do this as it might kill the trans completely) It drives and when you let of the gas it switches gears immediately and firmly and will stay in the next gear as long as you don't push it past 2500k, then it just revs with no power.

I'm open to some thoughts as I just put new tires, complete suspension replacement and upgrades, alternator and batt. I'm considering putting a used trans in it but don't really wanna risk tearing this one out to put another bad one in.

So any thoughts?

on a 727 torque flight, those symptoms would be a clogged filter. Who knows on a Ford automagic.

OdinAf - any updates as to what you did or what you found?

Maybe a stuck servo where if you back off the throttle it will shift? Doesn't sound like an actual failure, as when that happens you usually get no movement.
