Got a question for all you 4 banger experts out there.

I have an '86 Ranger 4x4. 2.9L engine, A4LD trans. I'm a real big fan of cars / trucks from back in the day because they were simple. Carbs, no elaborate electronics, etc. My goal with this truck is to build it as simple as possible. To that end, here's the question:

What 4 cyl and trans combo can I put in this truck that gets rid of all the electronic gizmos and gets back to just the simple stuff. The most electronics I want is electronic ignition. I want to keep and use the 4 wheel drive. Not worried about AC or anything like that. Ultimately I'm looking for something that will bolt right in to my present truck without a lot of fab work. Of course I'm not allergic to fab work so if some is required so be it.

Thanks in advance for any info.

you'd want a 2.3 and a Mazda M5OD to get the best trans.

For wheeling, fuel injection is better... keeping your 2.9 and maybe adding a duraspark conversion if possible would be pretty simple. I've been wheeling with some carbed jeeps and it got very old dealing with them stalling all the time from going uphill.
