My owner's manual says my truck has a 19.5 gallon tank. My fuel gauge appears to be working OK yet when it gets down to the "E" and I fill up the most fuel I can get in there is 13-14 gallons. I can't imagine a 5+ gallon "reserve" so does anyone have an explanation for this oddity?

You're not going to fit all 19 gallons in the tank. The tank is designed not to fill all the way so it has room for the fuel to expand under different climate conditions...

I don't think it is 19 gallons, probably more like 16.5. Google!!!

Just now with the needle below the red "E" mark I pumped in 14.8 gallons. That's still 4.7 gallons less than the stated volume. I wouldn't expect more than the equivalent of a gallon to allow for expansion.

16 gallons for regular cabs, 19 for xcabs...

Well, I guess I the same problem, I've had my 02 xcab, 4 door, since new and I have never gotten more than 15.5 gallons into it either (even with the check gauges light on for a while).

i had a 96 that had a stated 16.5 cap in the manual, but I managed to get 21.25 in it from sputtering to a pump.

turns out you could get fleet trucks with 21.5 gal tanks.

TLDR, you could have a unique model

Who would've thought such a question could get such a variety of answers? My truck is the supercab (19.5 gal) and I'm tempted to stick a full two gallon gas can in my storage box when the gauge gets to 1/4 and then run it until it runs out of fuel.

I have the same truck as you. When my light comes on I can put over 17 gallons in. Most I have put in was 18.5.
