Hey Guys,
I replaced the fuel pump assembly on my '96 Ranger 2.3L about 2 weeks ago and have an issue somewhere. My fuel gauge works until just about 1/4 tank empty, after that it doesn't lower. I've removed the pump, double checked the seating of the pump, have full motion on the float arm, and the tank seems to be cleared. So, I'm at a lost of what could be happening. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that you are sure that the float can swing up & down COMPLETELY when it's installed in the tank without bumping the filler neck or the side of the tank....

I would remove the assembly/connect the wiring harness/move the float all the way up/see what the gas gauges reads/ lower the float a little at the time watching the gas gauge to make sure it's working/lower the float all the way to see if the gas gauge reads empty......

also you can measure the depth of the tank in inches/measure the float at it's highest point to it's lowest point to make sure it's lowering all the way to the bottom of the tank once it's re-installed

i have the same problem and the only thing i didnt try is moving the float while it was out maybe ill try that. If its not that then what is it?

The new fuel pump should be installed facing the same way as the one you took out. I think it has to do with float clearance in the tank.

It has more to do with the lines not reaching to hook up if you don't.

Key off, unplug the fuel pump. Key on, check gauge. Should be 100% full or empty (changes depending on the year).

Key off, jumper the fuel gauge wires together. Key on, gauge should be at the other end of it's travel.

If it never goes the whole way to the bottom you have a gauge problem or a wiring problem.

One guy ik says it might be a ground that's bad when I put it in the paper I got with it said the battery was supposed to be undone does that matter and imma try what adsm08 said when I put the pump in I made sure it was facing the same way it came out.
