what is that black puck looking thing behind the high pressure fuel pump on a 1986 ford ranger with a 2.9 and im wondering if you can take it out and it will run w/o it

It's a fuel reservoir and is helpful to have there so you don't ever run dry or suck air momentarily (ie when the tank is low, or switching tanks with duals) in the fuel system. Some years have a filter in there....my 87 and newer do not have the filter inside of it.
 
It is really important on dual tanks as it directs the ruturn line to the tank being used. I remove them on single tank Rangers.

How do you do that? Just use the double-ended barbed splice piece, cut the ends and reassemble or?
 
No, You can buy lines at the parts store that go in place of that canister. They clip right in. I don't have the part#s right now.
 
thats wer the fuel filter is on my 86 and yours probably has it to. if you take it of you'll have to use an inline filter. its alot better and easier to change the filter if you do. the local napa stocks these kind of lines and stuff for them on the store floor.
