I checked the ranger’s top speed the other day. When the speedo hits 90, it acts like a rev limiter. Is this a fuel shutoff top speed limiter?

These vehicles suspension+steering+drivetrain+brakes... really not intended for highspeed, so careful.
May be exceeding the limit of your FuelPump to deliver flow demanded by that Speed+EngineLoad...

Depends on the year.

I dont think governors hit untill atleast 97 or 98, but i could be wrong.

Not sure about Fords, but I know my 92 Dakota 4x4 with a 5.2 V8 had one, If I remember correctly it was 113mph.
Ive *heard* rangers had it as far back as like 86 or 7, but it was set higher then the truck would actually go.

I know the F series/Expy/Econo's got limited in 97, at 98mph IIRC

Back in my younger days (and the ranger's too) I maxed at about 90mph also.

Probably known but wonder what the rev limit is on an OHV 98?

Probably just starts floatin the valves.

Pretty sure that's the case. With over 200k on it everything's a bit tired. May have gotten to 4500 but wouldn't do that now.
I belleve 2.9s would float in the 5300-5500 range. Probably same for 4.0

Ive never had a 2.9 with a tach but ive never managed to float em, but coming from the big block world i shift pretty conservative. If i think im over 4000 i get nervous lol

Usually the factory speed limiter is set a little under the speed rating of the factory tires. If the tires are rated for 110 mph, the limiter will be set around 105. That's something else to think about, because the tires on Rangers are not intended for high-speed driving.

Besides, I've had mine up to 80+ a few times and the way it felt made me very nervous. The truck just isn't built nor intended for that.

If you keep the loud pedal floored to the limit the whole time, most factory speed limiters shut off fuel until the vehicle drops back below a certain speed, is my understanding.

My 08 f150 shuts off fuel when the speedo hits 100. I was just wondering if anybody else in the asylum has experirnced the same. Keep in mind, my ranger is an 01 w a sohc 4’oh.

O’n to add, i am definitely not tached out.

Its probably governed.

Back when my speedo actually worked i had rusty #1 buried at 85+ a few times and it didnt feel that scary. But the steering does tend to wander at that speed and you start thinking about shit that can happen

One day I will buy a Flashpaq F5 and see if removing the top speed limiter works.

Well, I finally broke down and bought the Flashpaq F5. The top speed limiter is gone, but my truck is still a turd. Tis a pretty flat run from my house to work, and it took about a minute to get up to 100. I am not impressed, like i was with the F5 on my 5.4 F150. I will keep the tuner bc it is better than not having any tweeks at all.
