hey all. ordered a new front tank from LMC trucks, and didn't know the sender/pick up was not included. I thought ok, will take the one from the 86 parts truck. nope still different size.

anyone know proper pick up to order? my local parts stores all said nope, can't get that. will the back tank pick up be the same style if i can locate one of those?

cheers

83 reg cab dual tanks if this helps.

Last time I checked for one on my 84 I was told they werent made anymore. I ended up using a tank out of 87 and the sender/pickup (went with a low psi electric pump intank). If you can find those years in a JY, you may get lucky, otherwise just try a newer year sending unit on your pick up tube (might have to play with the wiring a bit, but its just 2 wires).

Thanks bane....

I might have to resort to plan "B" if i can't locate one. I will take the 2 I have to work and get the mechanic there to cut and braze up the nice one into the old tank's top holder and cross my fingers that it will hold together. i have tested the sending unit and she works, just was leery about chancing this venture.

thanks... my jaw hit the floor when the parts places kept saying good luck with that.... arrrhg nothing is ever easy.....

cheers

PS anyone have one for sale in good condition??

BUMP, Still looking to see if anyone has one of these that they can sell me. thanks

Sorry Angie...I have one from a 92 3.0 but it has the fuel pump attached...my 88 went to the scrapyard with one sitting in the tank...I meant to pull it and would have it now but it just got complicated in the final stages.

I would imagine yours is simply the sending unit for the fuel gauge...so would one with a fuel pump work without using the fuel pump?

I really can't see why it wouldn't...or even get one with the low pressure pumps from the years that used them in the tank...or even the later ones that didn't use the pump in the tank...there must be something later model that would either drop right in or you might need to swap in a newer style tank...

If you've already clarified this...my apologies...:)

I don't know if this will help but I think the part number for your sending unit is:

E3TZ9275A - Fuel Sending Unit-Midship Tank

I couldn't find one that ended in the A but did find one that ended in C from Green Sales Company. Here's a link.

Might be worth a shot. If I'm way off I apologize.

hi mark, no idea if one would work with the pump, my guess is no, there is a large size difference in the part that drops into the tank, the 1 on the 83 is small, check the top of the hole on the original, compared to the one from the parts truck that is 85 or 86, cant remember the year of it now. if it was just a sending unit i could live with it and monkey something, the pick up tube is completely rotted out on the original one, adding to the problems.

hence why I was going to get it cut and brazed onto the old top (hole cover)
thanks for trying though.

hi 1qwaz

thanks for the link to greensalescompany, never heard of them before and will 100% be getting in touch with them about this, and also looking for a few parts for the pinto that i will ask them about.

cheers

OK, I think I have figured out this problem and wanted to see if anyone else did this....

After a bit of research I was able to locate this pick up tube, I did a craigslist search and found a fellow that is parting a 84 bronco and he measured the top of the unit and it is 2 3/4 inches and will fit into the new tank.

even if the length is a bit off , this unit will still work nicely for it will fit the tank.

anyone use this before? I will be ordering this one and will post how it fits.

cheers

Picked up the unit today after work. Here are the pics of the 2 side by side. about 1 & 1/2 inches longer but that is easy to fix. the plug is a bit larger but can easily fix that also. the main thing is the size of the flange being the same to make a tight seal on the tank.

cheers

Looks like the one I had in my first Ranger...88 2.0 carbed....no pump and very basic...glad you got what you needed...and good to know they are still available...:icon_thumby:

thanks mark, yes glad to know that this is still available, little bit of homework and a good internet connection with google, anyone can learn anything now days.

Just finished bending the tube to sit at proper height, slipped back on the plastic filter, bent the float up a bit to register at the right area and popped it into the tank. fits like a glove. haven't tightened it up yet, will wait till it is being installed to the frame to just be sure I won't need back in there.

So glad this worked... if anyone else does this too, GO BUY A PROPER TUBE BENDER ... if you don't already have one that is.... last thing you want to do is kink the pipe, it takes a bit of pressure to bend, and also do it in small increments testing as you go and shine a light into the tank while looking into the tank, to adjust the float Angie held the unit for me and I took 2 vise grips to slowly bend the rod into the right height above the bottom.

cheers
