Okay...I've got a 98 and it has 180XXX on it...When I go about 40mph, if i press on the gas too much, my truck actually slows down. It won't go up a hill no matter how steep, and i have a thought that its the fuel pump but im not for sure...any help???:icon_confused:

Could be fuel related but sounds more like a clogged fuel filter. Does it slow down only at speed or does the engine not rev above a certain RPM?

Alright that helps narrow the problem down. Clogged fuel filter still sounds like a culprit or when catalytic converters get clogged up they'll prevent the engine from revving past a certain RPM. An easy way to check for a clogged Cat is to wait til night, run the truck on the street for 15 to 20 minutes of normal driving then look under the truck. If the cat is glowing red then it is clogged and needs to be replaced. Get a diagnosis first before you start throwing money and parts at it. There's also a way to test the voltage on the fuel pump but I'm not sure how or what voltages you should look for. Also a fuel line pressure gauge will help but I don't know the exact number either. Someone who has run these before can hopefully chime in. The last thing I can think of is since the truck has some pretty high miles, when was the last time it had a tune up?

Okay, so you think its most likely that cat...then the fuel filter...then pump? Im just trying to formulate a plan...

That's where I'd start. Cat is a quick and easy check, fuel filters are cheap. Just look for the more common and simple problems before the more complicated ones. Although while you're at it, check the condition of the spark plugs.

well i just had codes run on my truck and there was no misfire code...so those should be good. I've had an egr cod on there for the past freakin year...maybe that has something to do with it?:dntknw:

Ya probably. What was the code. Bad sensor or something else in the system?

its a manufacturer controlled code P1401...i believe it said manufacturer controlled auxillary emissions control...For that ive tried replacing the DPFE sensor, and the EGR valve

you can get your cat tested for free at ur local muffler shop usually. I'd just replace the fuel filter if u can't remember the last time you changed it, they're only like 10 bux and a peice o cake to change. If the cat's good and the filter dosen't help, do like kelly said and test the fuel pressure at the rail with a guage, your book will give you the specs. but i think it should be somewhere around 40psi.

you guys rock...getting it tested tonight. I should be able to have it fixed by tomorrow. ROCK:headbang:

If a Cat is glowing Red, it does Not necasarily mean that it is clogged, it is burning unburnt fuel, i.e. doing it's Job, you will need to get it tested, rather than just looking for a red glow, you can ask MAKG about that one..

My guess is the fuel filter, clogged so your truck is not getting enough fuel to rev high enough, you may wan to check your Wires/Plugs, Air Filter and Compression also
