Fuel pump wont kick on

Have a close look at the main loom plug that should be just under the brake master.
This one is 8 pins, rectangular and grey.
The power wire, red, will heat up melt the plug &/or the wire. The problem will either be an intermittent short or a no power condition after it has been separated and put back together.
The good news is it can be repined.
The challenge is finding a good one.

I have repined on both my 88's, one for a no start after engine replacement and one for an intermittent ignition circuit fault.
I call it a common problem from my experience.

Good luck
Rich

Never even thought about that. Could be the reason why my gauge cluster shorted out. Thanks. Ill check that one tomorrow. As for the pump getting power...its not. I've checked the cuttoff switch. And all mire grounds and plugs. Everything seems fine

Ok I'm getting fuel now. Awsome. But when the spout is pluged in an I crank it it skips. When its unplugged its fine. Either way it wont start and im gettin slight smoke out of the intake

So what was the fuel pump issue?

Still working on an '88 2.9l system I assume, so TFI ignition.
You swapped old distributor to new motor so I would check its timing first.

A 4 stroke engine has two #1 TDC's, compression TDC and exhaust TDC, the distributors rotor needs to line up with #1 spark plug wire on the compression TDC.
Timing light won't tell you which TDC is which because spark comes from Cam/distributor not crank.

You can pull #1 spark plug and rotate engine manually until you feel compression coming out of that hole, compression gauge is handy for that, then the TDC that comes up to the line will be the right one.
Pull distributor cap and make sure rotor is lined up with #1 on the cap

firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, so if rotor is pointed at #5 then it was lined up on the wrong TDC.
This should be a 50/50 proposition to get it right if you just guess, but my experience is about 80/20 I get it wrong :)

You can also rewire the cap, up to you

Distributor rotation is clockwise, double check firing order then check it backwards, lol, I mix up firing order all the time and would swear it was right.

Its a new distributor and the cylinders aren't numberd on it

numbers on cap doesn't matter.
Compression stroke TDC and rotor on distributor matching up with #1 spark plug wire does matter........alot.

i had a similar problem once my truck just died and wouldn't restart replaced the sending unit and still nothing it turned out to be in the electrical connector also had the same problem on the transmission electrical connectors.
