My bronco was running pretty good until yesterday.
It started cutting in and out while driving. It dies so I pulled over. When I went to restart I herd the high pressure fuel pump. It was pretty loud and inconsistent. I never really herd it before. I crawled under and tapped on it with my pocket knife. It started and ran pretty rough. It would barely pull it's self. Then it took off and ran ok. LOL good enough to get me home.
I do not have a fuel pressure gauge.
Do you think I need to buy a fuel pressure gauge before replacing the fuel pump?
I ll replace the fuel filter too.
Do you think I should replace the pump in the thank too?
thanks for any advice.

I would get the gauge and check the pressure. Then change the fuel filters and see what they look like. Check the connections at the pumps and go from there.
The in-tank pump could be failing to push enough fuel to the HP pump or the canister filter could be clogged. If the filter is clogged then the tank is probably rusted pretty badly inside.
I used to have an 86 a couple of decades ago and the tank had rusted internally and clogged the fuel pump pickup. It was in my family since new and that happened back in 97 or 98.

I would actually look at the in-tank pump first. Electric fuel pumps, especially the high pressure kind, get loud when they are running dry. If your lift pump died and wasn't supplying the frame pump, it would be loud.

I got the fuel filter off. Gas looked clean and I could blow through it.
The fuel reservoir however... Their was nothing in it. Should their be a filter in their?
I ll get a filter tomorrow and look at fuel pressure gauges.
thanks for the help

Some just have a screen.

So I am good the way it is? Would the parts store have what I need... LOL wait.
