Fuel pump? On the side of the road!!!

Its an 85 ranger with the 2.3. It has two fuel pumps. A low pressure in tank and a high pressure inline. When the fuel pump primes with the key turned to the on position should the tank one also be priming?



Symptom was "hiccupping" almost exactly like it did when I bought the truck and the in tank pump was bad.

Yes. The pumps share a power wire, but have dedicated grounds.

The high pressure pump is louder though, so unless the tank is low and letting sound resonate well it can be hard to hear the tank pump.
 
Okay thanks. I don't have a bed on my truck so I just pulled the hoses off and it didn't pump anything out when I turned the key on. I'll double check that ground wire while I'm at it.
