fuel pump issue?

Now I hear no pump...... I could hear it before. Dammit

The relay is the green one? If so, switching it out did nothing.

there should be a inline fuse before the relay...if the relay isn't getting power, well, it isn't going to work. double check connections.

if the fuel pressure guage is pegging or spiking, that is also saying that your FPR is shot, it is sticking, just not leaking into the vacuum line.

Would this be a 20 amp fuse?

My 88 has one but it doesnt look factory-ish. Niether of my 87s have one.

I fixed my FPR issue months ago as well as the back filter, vacuum lines to the egr solenoid and vacuum solenoid. Unless my new FPR failed, I have no issues with that.

Put my pressure gage om the shader connection and have 32 psi. When I revit it drops around half a pound the I let off. It goes to 35 psi for a second and back to 32. I drove around the neighborhood. I ran ok and I ju,ped on it and it ran good there too. I am hearing this noise from under the truck that sounds like "tinking" if the makes any sence? I drive it and it will drop off for less than a second and back to normal running condition. Gotta go climb under the truck to find where the niose is comming from?

sounds good on the FP.

is it tinny sounding or clicking?? maybe a bad plug wire??

by "drop off a second", do mean to say that the noise goes away?? or does the engine act like a miss fire or hesitation? or both?

Where is the module for the transmission located? Does it have a metal vacuum line and where does it start. Im thinking the noise that I am hearing could the vacuum modukator going to the transmission. It tested all the fuel pressure and it all is good.

Thinking that the tranny modulator is on the passenger side...up near the catalytic converter. and yes it there should be a metal line with rubber connections

I think that I have it narrowed to the pump in the tank. When it got down 3/4 of a tank the noise sounded like a house fan hitting the cover. My book says to pull the tank but I have heard other people say its better and faster to remove the bed? The fuel gage float sank over a year ago. I hate to go thru all that work just to clean the strainer and I dont think that the pump would make noise it the strainer was clogged? Ebay looks like the best price for a complete unit?

If your going thru the work of removing the bed and looking at the intank pump....I'd just replace it...especially if has some age to it and the fuel level gauge isn't working. with bed off it'll give you better access to the wire connection too.

I did some testing on the truck yesterday. My vacuum pressure runs around 17, that is the min good vacuum in my book. I piut my pressure gage on and the truck was 32 psi. I let it warm up, released the presssure and it dropped to 20 psi and if you reved it it did not move the pressure. I let it run for a while longer and it dropped to 10 psi? I went to the auto parts store and changed the front filter, what a PIA! Started the truck and it was running at 20 psi. I drove around the block and almost did not make it back. Ta;led to a guy last night that said to unplug the high pressure pump and see what it does? Should I do the same for the tank pump. They are both running?

Does any one have any specs as what the in tank pump puts out? There has to be some kind of balance or the front pump would suck the rear pump dry unless they both output the same and the front only increases the pressure. That might lead me to believe that a reduction of pressure and not run out of gas would point to the high pressure pump?

Can't say for sure what the tank pump spec is with the Ford setup, but being a long time BMW owner...the front (main) pump puts out ~70psi (like Ford) and the tank pump puts out 5-7psi. The tank pump serves more as a 'lift' for the main pump...especially when up & down hill driving with a partially filled tank to prevent main pump starvation and subsequent engine cut out.

Im confused now. It sputters no matter how much gas is in the tank? How do I know the the restriction in the rear pump is not bringing down the pressure and causing the problem in the first place? Do I pull the hose off of the incomming side of the high pressure pump and put it in a jar to see how much fuel comes out? I had a guy tell me to unhook the wire from the front pump and start it ? I dont think that it would run at all.
