Fuel pump differences

Hi All. 98 Mazda B4000 and I am wondering what the difference is on pre 08/17/98 and post 08/17/98 fuel pump is, if anyone knows. I will be replacing the whole unit.

My build date says 06/98 so it would be a pre model but more looking for an answer out of curiosity than anything, since both pumps, at least on parts web sites, they appear to be identical.

Wonder if that would have been the changeover in Mazda that happened to the Ranger, where the early one was a return style system that ran a lower pressure and the newer style that is “returnless” and higher pressure. On the Ranger there were two different returnless styles, the 98 model year trucks had no return at all, but the 99 and newer had a return off the filter.

The original return style trucks had a return line off the fuel rail, so take a look at your rail and see if there’s one line or two going to the motor.
