I'm having some issues with my fuel pressure in my 2000 Ranger 5.0L. It has stalled out on me a few times while driving. The pressure drops from 57psi to 20psi randomly when this happens. I may have to change the fuel pump assembly. The Ranger was originally a 3.0L flex fuel, so it has a special fuel pump that is compatible with ethanol.

I was wondering if I can just by a pump assembly for a 2000 Mountaineer 5.0 (what the motor came from) and use that since it is no longer a flex fuel vehicle. The flex fuel pump is $100 more. If the 5.0 pump installs the same way with the same fittings, it would be better for me to go that route.

Are they interchangeable?

I don't know. But I've heard of people changing out just the pump portion of the whole unit. I bought a b-II with the same problem, the previous owner had changed the pump and used vacuum hose. It had a crack and would suck air unless the tank was full until I finally figured out the problem.

The 2000 Ranger has the same fuel psi rating as the Explorer so I'd either just swap out the pump (don't know if you can just buy the pump) or drop in a whole new assy from a Ranger. Think the flow rates are the same also.

are you running a return or returnless style rail on your 5.0. if you are running a return line where you didnt have one before its an easy fix, pull your fuel pump and remove the regulator from the sending unit and replace it with a piece of high pressure fuel hose. if you are running a returnless fuel rail do not do this but you may need to change to a different pressure regulator
