I have an 89 ford ranger I just swapped out the 2.9l for a 2.9l out of a 1990 ford ranger and now when you drive it acts like it is straving for fuel. it runs and drive but will driving it acts like it is starving for fuel but if you put it in nuetral and rev the motor up and keep it up for a min it smooths out but only for a little bit then goes right back to starving for fuel. I thought maybe it was water in the two tanks so I put HEET in both tanks and filled them up and ran that fuel out but still no change what could it be?

Could it be that one had single fuel pump and one dual fuel pumps or different pressure regulators, did you pinch a line during the swap? :dunno:

If it has two fuel pumps, suspect the lift pump in the tank....., isn't.
Disconnect the HP pump on the frame rail and listen for the lift pump. It should run for 2 sec each time you go from off to run.

If you haven't replaced the fuel filter, do so and while its output end is disconnected, turn the key to Run, see that fuel flows out as the pump runs for those two sec.
