I folks.... I am a new member with a problem.... I need some help with my 87 ranger 2.9l. She seems to respond well idling and going through the gears but when i need to get into it for response in either 3rd or 4th gear she gets more throttle but does not really responding to it? I checked fuel pressure and it climbs real slow...Gas millage is crappy as well... Any thoughts?

pump is failing and is not supplying enough volume when needed, which is shown by a decrease in pressure. i had this happen just a few weeks ago. it acted up for a couple weeks and then the pump just failed completely, fuel pressure should reach operating pressure in less than a second, and not vary at all. it should also hold some amount of pressure after the ignition is turned off

Thank you for replying to me.... How do I know which pump to replace?? and would this problem cause my top end performance?

did your truck seem like no top end peddle response... Like no power at cruising speeds?

not only that, it got to the point that it wouldn't even rev past 3,500 rpm unless i eased the gas in reeeeeeaaaaallly slow.

Ok it sounds like the same thing... Hit the peddle hardly any response, unless you eased the peddle... Did you loose speed on a hill?

Try doing the little things first, RUN YOUR CODES, if there ok then check if your gas cap is not sealing,if your fuel lines are seaping or leaks at your connections, your regulator is a small quick fix and your fuel injectors have small filters that can get fouled up, check your fuel filter(s), and i agree to swap out your frame rail pump before DEALING with the intank pump. as for the top end performance, sure it can affect it, but it would also affect bottom and mid range performance as well. fuel pumps usually dont START to go bad, they usually just GO. Goodluck i hope its a cheap and easy fix.

hey Dave thanks... I checked the pressure and I get a very slow rise to about 20 or so ign on... then slow ramp to 36 or so running...
