I was thinking about switching my fuel injected 2.3 to a carb. 2.3. I am wondering what i would need to do it and if it can be done and if it is worth it to do this. Give me some suggestions.

WHY?

Going from EFI to carb would be like going from a LCD TV to a 1960's B&W TV.

Someone told me i could get more power out of my motor by switching from fuel injection to carb.

If this is on the '86, The lower plenum needs to be modified to accept a Carb.
Racer walsh has them already modified for way to much money. You can do it yourself if you have a Tig welder, Die grinder, etc. I would get rid of the TFI ignition as well.
Yes, you can make more power carburated. The downside is driveability.

Well its for a Prerunner and from what i have come to realize is that my motor in the truck is newer than a 86 (from diagrams for installing gauges) i think its about a 92 93 2.3.....will it still work?

As far as power is concerned, those who know say that with EFI there will be a little more power across the rpm band. As far as peak power is concerned, there is little difference between EFI and carb.

With a low power engine, the difference would probably be undetectable. Whether it would be worth it or not would be up to you. For most of us, it isn't worth it, but some like the carb and have done the change.

The EFI system, while it looks intimidating, is actually quite simple, and with a minimum of study, you won't have any problems with it.:)shady

For you people that think a 2.3 EFI system can make power anywhere close to a carb, You couldn't be more wrong. Do a little more research.
Esslinger and Racerwalsh have plenty of Info on this.
As far as making EFI power on a v-8. You CAN make as much horsepower with EFI as with a carb or more but, It will cost more than the average college tuition.
On the other hand, I wouldn't want a prerunner with a carb. It will have a lot of problems in the rough stuff.

Is it hooked up in the truck and running? Does it have 4 plugs or eight? '89 and newer had 8.

I think 1986-1991 had a funny head design with a roller cam. You cant bolt a carb intake to those heads because the porting is a huge difference. The have small d ports instead of the round and large d oval ports. You can use your lower intake by blocking the injector holes and buying an adaptor plate for the intake to put a holley 350 or 500 on it.

I still disagree.....lets see some data.....

he has to be talking stock efi...:icon_confused:

Even going stock 2.3L with a carb to 2.3L stock with EFI, there was a power increase. Another advantage of going to EFI, there is also better ignition, and timing control with a PCM.

There is no option on a 2.3 as to other than stock. No EFI system made for a 2.3 can compete with 350 holley 2bbl. There are much higher flow carb systems than that.
Esslinger had a write up on a NA 2.3 making 200hp with side draught webers.
They wouldn't say how much horse they were making on their drag car but, it used MECHANICAL fuel injection.
They have a chart showing the motor making more hp and tq throughout the RPM range.
That was with a modified iron head.
