for the guys that has done the 302 swap. i have a 87 4x4 ranger 2.9 v stand.5 speed. I have the engine running so-so. But not right one day it will run strong. And then the next day like crap rpms up and down when it warms up gets better. So i am thinking about righting the 2.9 off and going with 302. there are donors all over the place here in Texas. there are explores, navagator f-150. What you can't find for under 20-30 grand is 64-77 bronco or the f100-f150 60's up to 79. If it had a streight axle it's gone or restored. but to the main thing is rewire everything and go with computer. or go old school and carburetor. I see prows and cons for both, but i really hate elec. Plus my boss has a 2002 navagator with bad fly wheel eats a starter up in a short time. just setting, if i try i could probably get it for 500 hundred or less. He sold me a 96 ranger parts truck wrecked for parts for a dollar few years still have the 4.0 out of it. sorry this is way to long i busted up my left leg and knee at work been off work for a month had surgery last Friday go nuts being laid up.

EFI is best, better MPG and less maintenance

Carbs are OK, but you do need to fiddle with them all the time, but if you are "old school" then you know that.

The 1996 and newer computer systems are better than the 1994 and older computers.

2.9l had MAP system and TFI ignition so pretty much the worst EFI and spark system.

Your truck is set up for EFI, the easiest route would be to stay with EFI.

Navigator is probably a 4.6 or Triton 5.4? which would be a difficult swap as the 4.6 is very wide. That said, other than wiring, the 4.0L from the Ranger would be fairly simple...

good point

thanks made some good points. the old ranger is out 2wd. have 4.0 motor trans and rear axle. but what about the front and rear axles on the Navagator. would they be stronger axles. or try to find a older 4x4 with straight axles. witch hard to find around here. but my best bet would 4.0 would have ot get o ebay and find a computer. let a friend have that one to get his up and going.

Front axle out of the Navi... just say it won't fit.

If it is the solid rear it is probably a 9.75 (not sure of the 8.8's popularity in the SUVs) Stronger for breakage than a D60 but not for carrying weight. Has a bigger bolt pattern than a Ranger and is metric.

If IRS same rule applies as IFS.
