Hey folks, I'm not sure if this is the right thread, if not, would a mod please move it for me?

OK I tried to search this out, but it kept telling me I didn't have enough letters in the word (in). :icon_confused:

OK, I am looking at a 1990 model on craigslist. 2.9 4x4.
Owner says engine is bad, for $350.

Says he was getting fuel in the oil and didn't notice it until it was too late.

He says it quit running, which tells me it locked up on him. It's been sitting for quite a number of years now. I am considering purchasing this truck, and was wanting a few opinions from some of you gurus as to what do you think could cause enough fuel to get into the oil to cause a seized engine?

For the $350 purchase price, I can afford either to rebuild, or just purchase a rebuilt engine from Jasper, or one of the other manufacturers, IF that's what it needs, it might be something as simple as a crank kit and a re-ring?

If it was over fueling that much to wash into the cylinders & eventually the oil...then the FPR and injectors would be highly suspect. There are certainly other issues that could of helped ...bad plugs not firing dispenced fuel,...poor compression , for example, & in any number of combinations of those and a few sensors gone bad. Ultimatly it boils down to very poor maintenance.

Anyway ....you already know/suspect that it isn't worth investing bunch of time and effort to ressurect that engine. You can watch the salvage yards for a running one, for a cheeper route.

I'd check out the Tech Library here & look into swapping a 4.0, while in the Tech library look into the 2.9 section, to help you make a informed choice.

The 2.9 in its own right is a fine little engine....but there are getting fewer of them and if you want some performance up grades, fewer options still. Therefore the suggestion to swap in a 4.0. It (the 4.0) does have plenty of bolt on's and wider choice of tweeking availble.... but if your happy with what is there, by all means get a long block or find a good machine shop and rebuild a 2.9.
