Just picked up a 93 Ranger X Cab 4wd 5spd 4.0
According to the P.O the gas gauge used to work and now it works incorrectly.
the gauge pretty much just floats around.
Any ideas what would cause this?
Ive done some research and ive heard the floats in the tank sink to the bottom of the tank and that the sending unit can be bad.
If it is the sending unit, where do i get one that works EXACTLY like the OEM one? I need my gas gauge to be as accurate as possible.
As always help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

The OEM fuel float is brass. It does get perforated with holes and fails to float.

They cost about $8 at the Ford dealer.

Most guys remove the bed to gain access to the top of the tank, rather than dropping the tank. You'll need a breaker bar and a T-55 Torx bit to get the 6 bed bolts out. Then remove 3 screws from the filler neck. There is also a tail lights harness disconnect plug right at the middle of the back of the bed. Many guys simply prop the bed up in the front enough to access the tank top ring, rather than completely removing the bed.

Good luck!
