well before i posted about how some idiot without my knowledge tried helping my brother inlaw with removing my fuel filter while i was watching my son. he ended up taking a screw driver and hammer to "remove" my fuel filter. needless to say after that it never fed fuel right. well i got it replaced by goodyear, i keep trying different shops hoping ill find one that doesnt rape my wallet for things i cant do myself. $104.00 to replace fuel filter. they replaced said after it leaked fuel so they took it off and fixed teeth so it would hold and it didnt leak. w.e i knew it wasnt gonna be some 30-60 dollar drop off and replace. the screw driver made that possible... told i need drivers side tie rod replaced. ill do that myself. just gotta order a decent part, prob go motorcraft as alot of people here recommend them for stock replacements on a ranger.
it does seem a bit better, now to fix exhaust leak and check to see if some of the whistle sound is coming from loose upper intake bolts i think i read are known to loosen in 4.0's? idk but ill have to check...

My whistle sound was the fan clutch. I remember a thread on here somewhere about a little "bur" left on the throttle body (when it was cast) making a whistle as well.

EDIT: Another source of the whistle is the Idle Control Motor. IIRC, it whistles out of the little black cap.

I think you got raped..my fuel filter on the 2000 is under the drive side door, and looks like it would take about 20 minutes to change..and the part is 16.99$..

Well shops don't chage by how long it should take they charge by how long the computer tells them it will take, if your a good mechanic and can get it done faster they will still charge the customer the same rate. Say you have 2 rangers that need brakes and they are supposed to be 2 hour jobs each but you get both of them done just 2 hours, If the shop charges 98$ /hr the mechanic just made 392$ in 2 hours and can make more in the extra 2 hours.

But the Fuel pump took me 3 minutes to replace, you get the pump tool and put it one side pop it out and do the same for the other and it comes right out then you just pop the new one into place.

I went to Goodyear for my maintenance (oil, filter, tire rotate/wheel balance and while I was there I asked them to see when I was due for a fuel filter and they said it was due a bit later on and I said replace it. I tole them to go ahead and do it while it was there. The fuel filter with install was only
$39.00. I have a life time balance rotation on all our tires. That covers our 2 Jeeps, the Ranger and the Corolla. The oil/lube/filter is only $15.95. I have been going to our Goodyear guys for over 11 years now for all of our service (except on the Rouge that is done for free by Nissan for the next 7 years). Goodyear has never ripped us off and they have always been honest with us about any cost.
They replace an A/C fuse on my wife's 03 Corolla for free last year and ran a test on the A/C system for free as well. They will always get our business. Plus...why change my own oil any more? I have to deal with the mess and disposal crap!! I just got tired of it. It cost me less for time and expense in the long run for me to take it to Goodyear and while it is on the lift I get to look over our vehicals up in the air. I like that....now..if I had my own lift I would do it just to do it....lol

I mean the main reason it cost that much was because this tool job down the street messed the teeth up on it. Even so they do this on a daily basis and have better tools then I do. I have no bad thoughts. I know they only charge what it says it should. I don't know if I should do my tie rod myself but I've been told it's not that hard. So I'll look into it.
Can the tie rod cause heavy shaking at 60 or I wonder if my ball joints could cause this. They only said I need a tie rod. They told me my tire was worn more on passenger aide. And I told them how I had to lower drivers side cause I couldn't get passenger side torsion bar bolt to move that it's seized.

Alright thankfor the info. Guess tie rod first then if still shaking I'll go ball joints. Should I replace both tie rods at the same time? Hmmm gotta do some googling!!

Well, IMHO, I would do both. You are going to want to do an alignment afterwords. If the other side takes a dump on you in 3 months, you'll be stuck doing another alignment.

Ya that's what I was thinkin as it is an old truck. Maybe uppers and lower tie rod. I'll do it while my wifes on vacation with my son and her mom so I have 4 days to get what I can get done without interruptions. Salvage yard runs!!! Got 2 in my gps. Gonna check Holland auto salvage near me today. Others will have to wait. I hope to find interior parts I want to replace. Gonna rip out my interior and redo carpet during those 4 days also. Rugs disgusting.

Same here. Scored big with a good center console out of a 98 mountaineer matching the color or my mountaineer seats. Needs cleaning bout it. I wonder if I should hook up the power outlet on side of it... Might come in handy some day.
Ohh and my truck seems to hold gas alot better now. Ran alot of miles today and it barely dropped 1/4 tank. I think it was over sending or leaking but not showing leaks idk lol.

I had a 98 Mounty that had a power outlet right on the passenger side. It was behind a door IIRC, and intended for a cell phone charger.

Damn I miss that truck.
