When i bought this Ranger a few months back there was a new fuel filter behind the seat. So I think great , save me a few bucks. I bouht the tool from Auto Zone to remove it but when i tried the old one would not release from the fuel line on one side. I messed with it for an hour trying every angle , pushing the tool with some needle nose pliers but it appears that someone must have tried to do this without the tool. The fuel line has a couple of crimp marks where it looks like they tried to squeeze it or soemthing. Has anyone ever just cut the ends and used rubber hose instead? Any other ideas how to get the old one off???

if you're using the scissor type tool, i reccommend going and getting the plastic round ones. they are much easier to use. you need to get it off the right way. the line removal kit i'm talking about is pretty cheap and will come in handy later. when you get the tool in to relase the line you really have to tug on the line to get it off sometimes.

if not any auto parts store sells the kit to fix it rite by replacing that connector your havin problems with...

Try spraying some Kroil or PB Blaster in the connection. Sometimes you have to really pull hard to the two apart. Make sure the tool is fully engaged in the spring. Twisting the filter helps sometimes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will give them a try once it stops raining. Why does this stuff always happen in the WINTER!!!!

Just rip it out and put a new retainer in the end. The previous owner probably new it was messed up and thats why the new filter was behind the seat.:headbang:

better off not to just rip things apart, the previous owner probably didn't change it because he was lazy. why tear something apart and then have to go buying all kinds of stuff to put it back together instead of just doing it right the first time and not destroying anything...:icon_thumby:

The intent was not to destroy anything.:thefinger:I was just saying the retainer is probably allready damaged and should very carfully be removed and replaced with a new one for about a dollar.:headbang:That cheap little part saves a lot of time and then you know its right.:yahoo:

I have never replaced one of these so I'm not sure what retainer you guys are talking about. I tried pulling this thing off again and had no luck. I can get the back line off but no matter what i try the front side is STUCK!!!!!. I put everything I had into pulling on it but no luck. I had my buddy pushing the removal tool in while I was pulling on it , still no luck. If I use a pipe cutter to cut the fuel line would a rubber fule line and hose clamp work instead????

I just changed mine. You may have done this already but make sure you disconnect the Fuel Inertia Switch! Might as well take the gas cap off, relieve fuel pressure, park up hill, and wear goggles. I bought the metal scissor type tool and it worked with the assistance of pliers.

If the one end is already out theres no pressure on the line. Reach in between the filter and the line with needle nose pliers and pull out the spring retainer. Go buy a new retainer.:icon_welder: If you can't find one, I'll mail you one.:icon_cheers:

i wonder if there is any kind of record for the most time spent trying to change a fuel filter?? I am going to get some rubber line today and cut the line. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Pull the fuel pump relay and remove the gas cap.
Crank the engine over till it stops trying to fire.
Spray PB blaster into both disconnects.
Using the plastic tool, while pushing the line into the filter, use a twisting motion to insert the tool.
Do not let tool slide back on line, pull line out in twisting motion, some force needed.

Relieving the fuel pressure will be your biggest help.

Good luck
