This site has been a great help to me. I was driving along and suddenly lost power. It would idle but the moment I try to pull off or accellerate it would sputter and die. Finally i had trouble even getting it to idle but I was finally able to creep it into a parking lot. My truck had these symptoms yesterday after I replaced the fuel pump AND filter about 2 weeks ago and I have been driving it daily ever since to get the truck "broken in" as it had been parked for a couple years. I think the filter is clogged. At least i hope that is all it is... I have a 96 Mazda 4 banger. How often have you guys had to replace the filter after a fuel pump replacement on a vehicle has been sitting?:icon_confused:

I would simply remove that new filter and push fuel through it backwards, see how much gunk comes out.

My first thought is that the small section of tubing you used to connect the new fuel pump is not fuel compatible. Happened to me, shortly after I sold the truck to a coworker. He was not impressed. That small section of tubing that came with the fuel pump was not high pressure or fuel compatible. It melted apart.

I did notice that when we removed the old fuel pump there was a little 1 inch section of rubber tube on the pump/sending unit assembly that had turned to mush and teh pump itself was covered with corrosion. I'll post a pick when i get home. I'll bet that i had ethanol gas in it that ate it up while it was sitting parked.

I had the same symptoms in my b-II that the PO had put a 4.0 into. When I finally tracked the problem down to the fuel pump I found the short ~2" hose attaching the 'new' high pressure pump to the old system was not fitting tight to the hard lines any more. I used a couple of hose clamps which solved the problem for a few days. The problem came back and when I looked I found the hose had split beside the clamp. I replaced the hose with some fuel rated hose and problem solved.
Good luck,

Richard

Okay to day i changed the fuel filter (which was filthy and the gas was brown), and cleaned the idle control sensor and pvc valve and teh problem remained. It will idle smooth now but it will not go above 2000rpm. It stalls out so I can only barely go into second gear. I did notice that I can now actually hear a high pitched hum from the fuel pump which I know i didn't hear before. I hear it when i turn the key and i can hear it steady if I stand outside the truck while I have it idling. I added a pic of the old pump, i didn;t take a pick of the new one and I cannot recall what the fittting looked like on it, but on teh old pump the rubber tube you metion had tuned to goo, most of the plastic components were melted and the pump motor itself was a mass of corroded metal. i assume that is teh result of ethanol gasoline while it was sitting up. (I have learned a valuable lesson about ethanol form al this.)What's the deal could this be that broken rubber tube you metioned causing this new sound?:icon_confused:

the fuel pump is either starved for fuel or being overloaded like if the little piece of hose after the pump collapsed or if the inner teflon liner delaminated and plugged the hose (ran into that one before)

Well hopefully I can get to it this weekend. I was sick over New Year's weekend and has been raining off and on since last like last Friday!lol
What I don't understand is if this tube is not fuel rated, or rather ethanol fuel rated, how in the hell are they selling it or replacing this tube with a better one? If that is the problem I am going to be VERY angry and I will be sending a letter to both Auto Zone Corporate office and the manufacturer. I don't have time to be pulling off my truck bed for a second time! Especially not for a 2 inch peice of rubber tubing that should have and could have been replaced at the factory! :annoyed:
