when i changed the fuel filter on my 02 3.0l this past weekend I realized the new filter is a smooth cylinder, while the stock filter has a bolt and tab to locate it on the frame rail, or a built in bracket if you will. my 95 f-150 has a separate bracket for the filter that's mounted on the frame, I guess I assumed the ranger would be the same. I ended up cutting up the stock filter with a dremel, creating a holt in an arm of the bracket and ran a pipe band around the bracket and new filter. boot leg bracket accomplished.

That's a lot of work but good job. For future filter changes look for a universal clamp to modify so you can reuse it. Funny that the aftermarket filter didn't some with a clamp. Did ya go cheap or a quality name brand?

My bracket on 4.0 99 would hold filter by tightening strap. Yours was perm attached to filter or filter you bought was diff shaped?

My 03' had something similar to what you're talking about. I can't remember what I did, but I remember thinking it was bull sh!t. You didn't go with Motorcraft did you?

Sorry I'm late gents, yea, it was an integral part of the filter.

I thought the same exact thing, it's a FoMoCo filter.

The new one is a Purolator Premium somethin or other.

Here's what I came up with, works fine and provides the factory clip for the fuel line:
