Fuel Filler Problem

Hey, I'm new to the forum and have a few questions about the fuel filler hose on my 95 Ranger. Whenever I fill up my tank past 3/4 full it leaks gas out from the top of the tank, and I can smell gas until the tank is less than 3/4 full. From reading around this and other forums, I've gathered that it's probably the fuel filler hose. I live pay check to pay check, and really can't afford to get it fixed at this time.

My question is how long do you think I can get by without fixing it? If I don't fill up past 3/4 full is it going to be a safety hazard to me? How bad will it effect my gas mileage? Also, if I have some spare cash, and opt for the $90 ones they sell on the internet, does it work as well as the original?

Thanks for the help.

make sure its tight?

welcome to the forum, and my moms 97 does this, iether fill it up 3/4 of the way or hit up the junk yard for a new one.... duct tape =P jokes

i havent filled up past half a tank for 3 years cause of that

Thanks for the replies. My biggest concern was the safety of not fixing it, but since some of you have gotten by with the same problem, it doesn't appear to be much of a problem for now. I'll probably hit up the junkyard soon to look for a replacement.

id make sure ur replacement is clean, so wash it out with water, then let it sit for a day just to make sure all the water is out, and make sure it dont also have a hole in it. that'd be a pain to put it in then fine out its just like the old one

They're not too bad to change out. I have replaced them on customer's vehicles more than a few times. We get ours from Ford and they can be a little pricey, but they don't leak. I have painted them on occasion just to delay the inevitable onset of rust. Just make sure the vent in the filler is not kinked or you'll be slow filling your truck until the kink is fixed.

mine can only be filled halfway before it leaks. could it still be the filler hose?

I went ahead and dished out the $70 for the online replacement part, and got it in the mail last week. I plan on replacing in sometime later this week. Anybody got any tips on installing it or removing the bed? I picked up some PB Blaster so hopefully the bolts won't be much trouble.

Be careful with those bed bolts. I usually break at least one when I remove them. Make sure you have a T55 torx bit before you start. It is possible to replace them with regular 1/2" bolts and nuts. Also make sure you don't kink the filler neck vent.

Same issue here....just a FYI to others with this issue Ebay 65 bucks

so it doesn't "sting" as bad..

My mileage is poor (19mpg mixed hwy/city) I'm hoping the filler neck is the only part of my fuel tank which is leaking...but its impossible to tell at this point.

Holy crap, did you see that guy's sold items count? Nearly 500,000!!!! That is one selling sombitch!:icon_surprised:

Thanks for the info, working on a customer's truck right now with CEL codes, but tank is leaking also. That sucker is over $100 from Ford, isn't it?
