Is there a sure fire way to tell if you have a empty one or one with a filter inside before tearing it apart?

Im gonna replace mine when i tear back into it but i dont tear it apart, and prolly break it, if theres no reason to.

I haven't found a 100% way to tell.

I have yet to find an 87 with the serviceable filter though, and I've owned, and tried, on three of them.

Mines an early 87. Theres been a few things ive noticed differene from rusty #1 as far as parts went.

Rusty #1 was born 04/87.
Rusty #2 was born 10/86

The earliest one I've had my hands on was a 12/86 but it had a Napa canister in it, so what was there originally is anyone's guess.

I would use a band-style filter wrench. I don't think one of those will be able to grab tight enough to damage a sealed one, but should take the cup off an unsealed one.

I figured that was the best way. Im kinda thinking it has one. Judgeing by 1- it sat for 12 years 2- the 1/2 tank of fuel i siphoned from it was nasty as shit. And 3- the normal fuel filter was pretty clean yet when i changed it after i had driven a while. So im thinking that filter caught all the shit.

My 88 had a filter in, probably not an original as the filter after the high pressure pump had been changed. I used giant sized channel locks to get it off but it wasn't on there very tight at all.
