I picked up an 03 edge 4x4 to replace my 94 4x4. The PO towed the truck without disconnecting the rear driveshaft. Destroyed the tranny and bent both driveshafts. What is the probability that the front gears are botched?

Wow... What a retard... Everyone who's seen a tow truck or has been towed knows to... Do certain things... Like tie the steering wheel and tow from the back.

To answer your question, yes your front axle should be fine as long as it wasnt in 4x4

flat/dolly towing.... i dont tie the wheel....but i do pull the drive shaft if the t case has no neutral. generally i would never tow from the back......if i cant pull the shaft i leave it running and in neutral.:dunno:.....tow it to the moon doing it that way.

front axle is fine whether it was in 4x4 or not.

back axle made it right?:D

The front axle is fine. On your 2003 it is a live axle and is pushed (and gears are turning) every mile you drive whether its 2wd or 4wd. Poor trans, though.

This makes sense, especially that the rear shaft would destroy the tranny gears. But how did the front shaft warp/bend? I'm assuming the front tires were on a dolly but I could be wrong.

Yeah, the right axle (the one that gets power) was botched. He said it was rebuilt but the seal is seriously leaking some gear oil.

It is a factory 4.10 but I'm swapping my 4.10 LS from my 94 anyways (borrowed it from a 2001 fx4, i believe).

Not that it is important but here is no 2001 FX4.

n.b. My rear was off a 2005, so maybe it was an FX4. Is there any way to tell because I accidentally found a good deal on an 2003 FX4 rear and wouldn't mind the extra security of 31-spline?
