front gears engaging by themselves

good day every one, when I start to move the truck gears on the driver side front tire start to clunk , it sounds like the 4x4 is trying to fall into gear. this is on the driver side only. The noises are of gears and not suspension. Any advice of what may be happening, would be appreciated. Ken
