Last week I was coming home from Ocala, Fl where I took my 99 lifted 2wd Ranger out trail riding with some friends. On the way home I came to an intersection and had to brake for slower traffic ahead. My front end and steering wheel did some shaking!! I also felt this vibrating and I thought it might be a ball joint, but I had just checked them a few days before and all was well. I thought maybe some glazing or dirt on the rotors from the brake pads and thought I will just get to an area where there is no traffic and to some panic stopping. I did this and all seemed well. Back up to highway speeds and then another slowdown and it started the shaking again. No popping noise or vibration while driving, only the weird shaking feel again while braking.
My wife's car did this late last year and we had to get her rotors replaced at
(47,000) miles. I thought maybe this is what it is as well. I drove it a few more days and every once in awhile I would do a panic stop and this seemed to clear up the issue. It started again real bad yesterday and I decided to take in into our Goodyear place and they said the rotors are shot so I was glad that's all was wrong.
They said the rotors had been turned to the limit and replacement was the only way to go. I had them replace the rotors, repack the wheels bearings and put new pads, they turned the back drums (back brakes looked great they said). Man!!! What a difference this has made. The truck is like new again and stops without any shaking or vibrating. $420..... I just turned 70,745 miles yesterday. I think I will stop by more often for a quick checkup once in awhile. I have been going there for about 10 years now and they always tell us to stop by and get the cars looked at. They don't charge to inspect...only to repair. I bought my truck new in July, 99. It has been a great truck!!!! It still looks very good for it's age!!
