Front Differential Disengaging??

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger, with an 4x4 on the fly, as they call it. When in 4 wheel High OR Low, the front differential Disengages Randomly? Its a problem that has Progressively gotten worse. While in the RPM's and it disengages it sounds HORRIBLE, when it disengages at a low RPM it sounds like gears slipping......... Im not exactly a mechanic but I understand that my hubs and differential are at all times are moving/spinning even in 2 wheel drive up until the transfer case. When engaged my electronic actuator works properly until it randomly disengages?????? Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

Correct, your front axle should be permanently engaged. Sounds to me like a possible problem with your transfer case.

Assuming you've tried all the suggestions in the FAQ post at the top here, I'd get under there and start checking for things like a bad front driveshaft CV joint, and for problems in the t-case itself (slipping chain maybe, which I've occasionally seen on the '98up trucks). There's also some chance it could be within the front differential or axle itself (CV joints, spider gears, etc.) although the t-case seems more likely.
