I wondering if the front diff is the same between ford rangers and explorers? The reason I ask is I would like to put this in

Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential
Product code: QDF37Z
Catalogue Page: 9
£550.00 (Unit price exc. VAT)

Quaife ATB differential for Ford Explorer 4WD front is suitable for Ford Explorer 4WD. A direct replacement for the standard Ford open differential, the Quaife ATB differential transforms your car's performance.

Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip differential, the Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential relies on gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation.

The Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like a conventional LSD. Rather, the Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks.

The Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential has many benefits over a standard open differential, including maximising traction and minimizing wheelspin, eliminating torque steer and snatching in front wheel drive cars compared to conventional LSD units, and a maintenance-free design which retains the standard oil lubrication.

The Ford Explorer 4WD front Quaife ATB differential is proven in circuit and drag racing, rallying and road use, and is produced from Corus steel billets, and is CAD designed and CNC machined, then inspected to ISO 9001 standards.

With over 170 applications, the Quaife ATB differential is second to none. Accept no imitations!

Quaife ATB differentials are used by Ford, General Motors and Daimler-Chrysler as original equipment.

The Quaife ATB differential for Ford Explorer 4WD front is also now subject to a lifetime warranty (subject to terms and conditions).

Please confirm your application using the attached techncial drawing.

what year ranger and what year explorer?? i know the d35 ttb rangers and the d35 ttb explorers share components but i dont know about the newer setups, also dont know about the awd explorers

The article just says: "Explorer 4x4". Didn't the '97 and newer explorers have the 8.8 front end?
If they are all d35s then it should work in the Ranger d35 as well.

Isn't the 8.8 a rear axle? Explorers came with the TTB D35 front end and the D35 IFS front end.

Conventional LSD locking harshly :icon_confused: Is that a joke?
Anyways... Explorers went from TTB to IFS in 95 and rangers went from TTB to IFS in 98. Both use D35 pumpkins but the TTB has reverse cut gears and the IFS has standard cut gears.

Stop calling the '98-up '95-up torsion bar suspension "IFS" because technically speaking the TTB is also an "IFS" setup...

Only a SAS isn't an IFS.

That being said

the SLA ('98-up ranger, 95-up explorer) Dana35 front axle used different gears and a different NARROWER carrier than the earlier TTB Dana35

So what year for BOTH vehicles being discussed?

as for a conventional LSD "locking harshly" :bsflag:
a Limited slip is ALWAYS locked, it actually has to
kinda UNlock to allow cornering.

My though on an ideal front diff would be a torsen.

The 2 are distinctly different. TTB is TTB and IFS is IFS, I don't see beams and radius arms on IFS and I don't see tortion bars and a-arms on TTB.

Yes the two are completely different but, His point was that they are both IFS. The proper referance is TTB or SLA.
Everyone else knew what you meant.

I get a little confused from time to time. I knew something used the 8.8 in front.
I didn't know that dana made different D-35s that didn't have interchangeable parts. They jerks should have given it a different number.

The Quaife L/S is as close to a torsen as you can get, and one of the guys on offroadrangers.com had one in his 4wd prerunner, however they were experimental and never went into fullscale production due to limited interest...this however may prove they have found enough interest and have begin full scale production of the unit.

the website does not list what year it works with, but does mention it does not work with AWD explorers. Interestingly enought this part is listed on the Northamerican website as well as the European. I will contact them to see what years it works with.

As for the difference between Quaiffe and Torsen, I am not to familiar with torsen yet, but have been using Quaiffe in daily drivers, and race cars for years. Never had any issues.

The only problem that I can see with a Torsen in the front-- and it depends heavily on how you off-road-- is if you get one front wheel in the air, the diff acts like it's open. Personally, my first choice would be a selectable locker and 2nd, the Torsen.
