Front brakes lock up when going forward after about half hour

Hello - new to the forums. I've been searching for this particular problem for about an hour and haven't had much luck finding anything exactly like what we have going on.

We have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT automatic transmission with 4WD. Recently, we've been having an issue where when we put the car into gear, it feels like the front brakes are locked up. When it's parked in our driveway, we have to back up quite a ways before putting it into drive and then sometimes it will go but often at other times, it will lock up, squealing and whining. By giving it a lot of gas, many times we can get it to go forward this way but often we put it into 4WD. It moans and clunks when put into 4WD but then it will go fine, like it breaks loose whatever is holding it back. It seems to have some difficulty coming out of 4WD and it's very difficult to get it out of 4WD low (we are trying to avoid using that altogether at this point). When we are actually driving the car, it shifts perfectly. Transmission seems to work fine, fluid is ok, etc.

Recently, we changed the brakes and rotors on the front and new shoes, drums and brake kit on the back. Would anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Is it something to do with the brake job or is it a transmission or transfer case issue? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

sounds to me like you have an oil soaked brake shoe.. either check the diff fluid in the rear and or pull your rear wheels off and pull the drums off.. check to see if the pads or drum is wet

also.. check your brake fluid level

i woudl start off in that direction

Are you sure the 4 wheel drive is disengaging when you put it in 2wd? Driving in 4wd on a hard surface will give you similar symptoms.

Did you grease the rails where the two halves of the brake caliper slide? Could you have the brakes locked on because of crud and rust on those surfaces?
