Ok i think what I'm reading is that the trannys from a 2.9 to a 4.0 are the same with that being said I would like to know is there different/better 4.0 5speeds and if so what do i look for also will need to be a 4x4 trans thanks guys for any help in advanced:D

2.9L 4WD trucks usually (but not always) had a Mitsubishi FM-series transmission whereas 4.0L trucks always came with the Mazda M5OD. The M5OD is a far better transmission than the FM.
A select few 1990 4WD 2.9L trucks came with the M5OD as well. If you can find one, they have a slightly different ratio set with deeper 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears. You can also "make" a 2.9L M5OD by taking the internals from a non-4.0L M5OD and swapping them into a 4.0L M5OD case.

So all 4.0 are the same and the m50d is the way to go then thanks i just hope the junkyard around here still has some they had a bunch a while back but i had a yota back then and thanks for the info.
