I've replaced the driver's side freeze plug twice on my '87 2.9 and it just failed again during ODB testing. Fortunately it's in my driveway and I found the failed freeze plug.

The style I used is the rubber plug-type with a nut and bolt that squeeze together two plates that basically squish the rubber to form a seal.

Anyone have better solutions you can direct me towards?

Have you tried the cup style plugs?

I have been notified by a highly skilled mechanic that the rubber plugs should only be used as a temporary fix. Try visiting your local auto parts distributor and purchase the metal cup plugs. They take alot more work to install but will last for years.

Getcha some sand paper and clean the hole walls real good. Leave circular scratches on the block. Then install the rubber plug EVENLY INSERTED in the clean scratched opening. It should last for years if installed correctly.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

Apparently the rubber plugs are emergency/temp fixes and the metal are perm. The only problem is installing the perm metal plugs requires taking the motor out...unless there is some trick or system others have used?

This is the plug located on the driver's side right behind the dipstick. I've removed the dipstick for easier access but still don't see how to properly set the metal plug.
