I'm looking for a free SMS/txting app for Android (droid 2) that doesn't have cellular service (wifi only). Any suggestions?

Droid 2, giving my kids each one (pass down once I upgrade) w/o cellular service to use as an ipod. A cpl of their friends has a real phone and/ipod. I briefly had a chance to look yesterday, between three 7 yr olds jumping around and Lady Gagag in the background melting my brain, and I saw references to programs that will allow them to send a txt to a real phone and/or ipod with the same app installed. I didn't catch the app names or whatnot.

Google Voice will send actual SMS.
There are dozens of apps like "WhatsApp" that will send SMS-like messages, but only work if the recipient also has the app.

I'm now finally able to start setting up one of the "phones". I've installed the whatapp and GO SMS pro. Whatapp won't work w/o a cellular number (won't let me get thru that part). GO SMS let me work around that and seems like it might work, but probably only too ppl with the app installed (FYI, the go sms seems to have a TON of features!). I'll try google voice next.

I did finally find a service called Heywire. Its creates a “phone number” that can be used for txts and some other options. The receiving person does not need the program to send/receive texts. Looks like will even do MMS messages.

hmmm cool... I may do this with my droidx when I upgrade. I currently use go sms pro as my text message client, and other than an occasional spam message from go sms (well I guess they have to pay for it somehow) I love it.
