my friend gave me a free ac compressor from a truck in his yard. The AC looks in great shape but it looks like the lines were disconnected for some time and I can see some dust/dust has gotten inside the unit. Should I try it? Can I clean it out?

I personally have not had good luck with junkyard a/c compressors. They were cheap & relatively easy to change but the cost of freon adds up. On the other hand, if you have a freon recovery unit & ample time .... go for it.

+1 ^^^

You can try it out by adding oil in it then sealing up the system but do not add "freon"
Start engine and manually engage the compressor, 12volt jumper wire
See if it spins freely, no noises
If so then charge the system to see if it works fully
